The Bismarck was on its maiden voyage, commanded by Admiral Günther Lütjens, when it was sighted off Bergen, Norway, by a British reconnaissance aircraft. It was the most formidable battleship built at the time, with a displacement of 52,600 tons, eight 15-inch guns, and a speed of 30 knots. The ship sank on May 27, 1941, in the North Atlantic near France, after being attacked by the British navy. The battleship Bismarck was one of the largest battleships built for the Kriegsmarine, the navy of Nazi Germany. The Titanic was known for being the largest ship in the world at the time and for its captain disregarding warnings of ice on the route. The ship collided with an iceberg and sank, killing about 1,500 passengers and ship personnel, and 700 survived. On April 15, 1912, it sank during the maiden voyage of the British luxury passenger liner en route from Southampton, England, to New York City. The RMS Titanic was a luxury steamship operated by the White Star Line. Prepare to embark on an underwater journey as we explore the deadliest and most famous shipwrecks and their historical treasures. Some notable shipwrecks can be visited, stranded on beaches, deep on the bottom of the ocean, or lying on terra firma. For many historians, shipwreck hunting even became a hobby. The goal is to search the open seas for sunken vessels and lost underwater historical treasures.īillions of dollars in gold, silver, and other valuable artifacts have and will be found. The United Nations (UN) estimates that around three million shipwrecks are lost underwater.Īs a result, there are several expeditions publicly sanctioned by governments and others privately funded by organizations and foundations underway. In this article, we explore the world of shipwrecks and present to you some of the most famous ones that have been found.įrom the Endurance, which was lost beneath the ice floes of the Weddell Sea, to the RMS Titanic, these shipwrecks have captured the imagination of people all over the world. They went down to the bottom of the ocean, leaving behind tales of their voyages and the events that led to their sinking. Over the years, many ships have met their untimely end. It has a more smoothly sloped hull than the Danube-class and features a unique tetryon plasma impulse engine which can vent plasma into space behind it, damaging and even immobilizing ships that pass through it.Shipwrecks are often shrouded in mystery and carry stories of adventure, bravery, and sometimes tragedy. In the video game Star Trek Online, the Yellowstone-class is a special version of the Danube-class runabout. The model itself was mostly reused footage of the USS Rio Grande and USS Ganges it also marks a major inconsistency, as the Yellowstone is shown both with and without a sensor pod.Ī Yellowstone-class ship as seen in Star Trek Online It is unknown if the ship design existed in the "prime" reality. The Yellowstone-class runabout only appeared in the alternate timeline shown in "Non Sequitur" and is the only appearance of a runabout in Star Trek: Voyager. ( VOY: " Non Sequitur" okudagram)Īppendices Background information Standard performance of this vehicle was warp 4 for 38 hours, and warp 6.2 for 32 hours. Power plants were two tetryon plasma warp nacelles and twelve microfusion thrusters. Standard maximum payload was 6.6 metric tons, and uprated maximum payload was 8.9 metric tons. Mass of this vehicle was 4.5 metric tons empty. The vehicle was 10.5 meters in length, 4.2 meters in beam, and 3.6 meters in height. ![]() ( VOY: " Non Sequitur")Īccording to the master systems display, the runabout accommodated two flight crew and one cargo specialist. The runabout was stored in Spacedock One. Many of the ship's defensive systems were yet unfinished, including unplaced safety interlocks. Strickler found the design of the Yellowstone to be interesting.Īlthough spaceworthy, construction on the Yellowstone was still underway in early- 2372. On stardate 49011, after six months of work, Lasca and Kim conducted a presentation to Admiral Strickler on the Yellowstone, focusing on the fracture problem. Several weeks were spent on resolving the problem, which was "cured" with new plasma flow equations. The Yellowstone had one key design flaw in terms of working out a dilithium fracture problem. ![]() Kim was responsible for designing the new tetryon plasma warp engines. Two key members of the design team were Lieutenant Lasca and Ensign Harry Kim. The prototype vessel of this class was the USS Yellowstone, which was designed by the Starfleet Engineering Corps and constructed in late- 2371.
